Abstract:

The project aims at studying the Bulgarian dialects across the Bulgarian language continuum (and outside the state borders) at the level of phonology, morphology, vocabulary, etc., and in connection with other languages in Europe at dialect and socio-linguistic level. The project applies descriptive, diachronic, synchronous, contrastive, sociolinguistic, statistical, etc. methods, accompanied by modern approaches of collection, processing, preservation, presentation and visualisation of the language material. Observations on the current state of dialects include levelling contrastive dialect features, linguistic convergence and functions of the modern mesolects.

The project meets the priorities of the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 and specifically Excellent Science and Societal Challenges. The project is a part of two priority areas of research at the Institute for Bulgarian Language – Cultural and Historical Linguistic Heritage of Bulgaria and Theoretical Linguistics.
