Campaign “The written word remains. Write correctly!”

On the National Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture, 24th May, the Institute for Bulgarian Language of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences invites you to take part in the campaign “The written word remains. Write correctly!”

On 24th May 2015, from 9am to 3pm, at three sites in the city centre of Sofia you can do a short exercise with a dictation, which does not only check your knowledge of Bulgarian spelling and punctuation, but is also a tribute to the Bulgarian education and culture, the Bulgarian teachers and academics, educators and cultural figures. The sites are:

  • At Odeon cinema at the intersection of Graf Ignatiev Str. and Vasil Levski Blvd.
  • The exit of the Serdika Metro Station near the Saint Nedelya Square
  • Opposithe Sofia University in front of the Knyazhevska Garden.

Young scientists from the Institute for Bulgarian language will help with advice and will explain the most common mistakes. You will be able to discuss with them some spelling and punctuation rules used in the dictation, trends in the development of the Bulgarian language, as well as the capabilities of modern language technologies. All participants will receive stickers “The written word remains. Write correctly!”, which you can stick on misspelled boards or signs in public places. People who perform successfully on the dictation will receive other prizes as well.

As a partner of the initiative, the National Publishing House “Az Buki” also takes part in the campaign by publishing the dictation and inviting students from across the country to assess their knowledge.

The campaign “The written word remains. Write correctly!” of the Institute for Bulgarian Language “Prof. Lubomir Andreychin” at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences aims to raising awareness among students and parents, legislators, media, experts – teachers, researchers, academics, institutions related to education, to the great importance of education and science (and literacy as their foundation) for the development of society.
