Abstract

The subject of the study is the Bulgarian and Polish colloquial lexis in a comparative aspect. The main aim is to present some problems, results of previous studies and guidelines for future research in this field. The main sources for the language data are Bulgarian and Polish lexicographic editions. Firstly, the author presents the understanding of the concept of colloquialism in Bulgaria and Poland and the terminology associated with it, then, the main groups of colloquial lexis are analysed. The most important features of words of foreign origin and words formed by word derivation are briefly described. Colloquial lexis formed as a result of metaphorization is analysed in more detail. At the end of the article, conclusions are presented which show both similarities and some significant differences between the two languages. The author’s interpretation of the reasons that led to this condition is also suggested.
