Abstract: The paper is an overview of the history of the Slavic studies in the University of Lodz since 1945, with an emphasis on the teaching of Bulgarian language, literature and culture after 1995, when the Department of the History of the Polish Language created a Slavic Studies Unit with a Bulgarian profile. The main lecture courses, the directions of the research activity, the successes of the researchers, as well as difficulties accompanying teaching and research in the field of Bulgarian studies are presented.
