Syntactic Knowledge in the Grammar Books from the Time of the National Revival

Abstract: This research is devoted to the syntactic knowledge in the grammar books from the time of (Bulgarian) National Revival. The historical context in which they originate has been characterized together with the authors’ goals and tasks. The development of syntax
through education has been presented as a typical process for the period of Revival. Neofit Rilski‘s book „Bulgarian Grammar“ is considered as a connection between the new and old philological tradition(s). The fact that until the appearance of I. Bogorov’s book „The First
Bulgarian Grammar Book“ syntax is considered to be a „black hole“ and syntactic knowledge cannot be derived only from the process reasoning contained in the works has been outlined as well. An approach previously tested in research, namely through the reading of sentence definitions supported by a formal record of syntactic patterns, has been chosen. The origin of grammatical criticism is outlined.
