The project is planned to address fundamental problems in the field of theoretical linguistics, which are essential for the study of the Bulgarian language using modern means. Its main aim is to identify and explore problems of the linguistic theory and practice that can create an adequate framework for linguistic research in Bulgaria, since the Department of General and Comparative Linguistics is the only scientific unit in Bulgaria dealing with fundamental research in this field. This determines the main objectives of the project – to extend the study of the Bulgarian language on a modern theoretical basis and to widen the comparative study with related and non-related languages. The methodology of the study is based on contemporary paradigms in linguistics, as well as the advances and trends in areas such as linguistic semantics and pragmatics, language philosophy, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics. The expected results include the integration into the latest scientifictrends and the creation of an adequate theoretical framework for empirical linguistic research and analyses in Bulgaria. The project seeks to improve the quality of knowledge in general and theoretical linguistics and to integrate it into the European research field with a view to using a modern methodology. Particular attention is paid to the synergy between fundamental research and preservation and enrichment of the national cultural heritage. The subject is planned in view of the priority area of research of the Institute for Bulgarian Language – Theoretical Linguistic Studies.
