The research projects of the Department aim at the extensive study of the Bulgarian dialects on the basis of rich authentic material from the spoken language from the entire linguistic territory and in line with the latest advances in linguistics.

The Department works on issues associated with the Bulgarian culture. The study of the dialects reveals a number of specific properties of the Bulgarian language as an expression of the Bulgarian national identity to support language and cultural diversity in Europe. The research on the archaic features preserved in the Bulgarian dialects and datable back to different periods is a contribution to the efforts for preservation of the Bulgarian cultural and historical heritage. The study of dialects outside the state borders is closely related to the research on the unity of the Bulgarian language in contemporary and historical perspective.
