„Bulgarian Grammar” Forum

The Institute for Bulgarian Language organises the first meeting of the Bulgarian Grammar Forum on 27th November 2014 at 13:00 in the Great Hall of the Institute for Bulgarian Language (52 Shipchenski Prohod Blvd., block 17). The topic of discussion is: Meaning and structure of language: ways of representation.

We will discuss problems related to the two main groups of grammatical theories- formal and functional, within which there are a number of popular and less popular theories. The main questions of the discussion are:

  • Do the different approaches contradict each other – on the one hand, the formal approach which employs consistent procedures for analysis and classification of linguistic units, and on the other hand, the pragmatic approach in which linguistic units are examined in terms of the communicative purpose?
  • Are there levels of study which require that one approach prevails over the other, or do we need to look for intersections between them?

The aim is not (only) to give definitive answers, but to exchange views, to express assumptions and to create environment for an informal discussion on the problems of Bulgarian grammar.
