The Seminar “European Language Resource Coordination” has a Great Success in Sofia

On 18th March 2016 at the Home of Europe in Sofia, 124 Georgi Rakovski St. the seminar European Language Resource Coordination was held, attended by about 150 representatives from the public administration, government institutions and companies in the field of professional translations, information and language technologies and publishing.

After the greetings of Mr. Ognian Zlatev, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Bulgaria, and Mr. Hristo Hristov, Director of Information Technologies Directorate of the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications, Professor Stelios Piperidis presented the objectives of the project in connection with the establishment of the CEF.AT Machine Translation Platform as part of the Mechanism for Connecting Europe and explained the benefits of automatic translation and the importance of language resources for its improvement.

The seminar included three specialised discussions with experts from national public administration, government institutions, translation agencies, legal information systems companies and language technology specialists on the following topics: “Public administration in Bulgaria and multilingualism in Europe”, “Language resources for automatic translation for Bulgarian”, “How can we be useful?”. The session provided the opportunity to discuss the application of automatic translation in the work of the national public administration and the possibilities for its improvement.

Ms. Rogova from the Legal Department of the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications and Ms Ivanova from the Directorate for Modernisation of Administration to the Council of Ministers provided important information on the legal framework for the provision and re-use of data and the Bulgarian Portal of Open Data.

The project European Language Resource Coordination is the first pan-European initiative involving all EU Member States, Iceland and Norway. The expected results are: to improve the European Commission’s automated translation platform in favor of public administration in Europe as well as the general public and to provide quality administrative services within the Single European Digital Market.

The National Seminar was organised by the Institute for Bulgarian Language at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, together with the Representation of the European Commission in Bulgaria and the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications.
