Abstract:

In the Middle Ages, along with the translations, an impressive amount of original Old Bulgarian literature was created. Beside the well known works of Clement of Ohrid, John Exarch, Chernorizets Hrabar, Constantine of Preslav, etc., in recent decades, due to the efforts of Bulgarian researchers in particular, a large number of original hymnographic works, some of which contain the name of their author, often hidden in an acrostic. Although following the specific medieval concepts of authorship, the original works show real linguistic material which is not dependent on foreign models. Thus these works are first-rate source for the history of the Bulgarian language. However, although they give the opportunity to observe the development of the Bulgarian language at all levels, a large part of them, with a few exceptions, have not been subject to linguistic processing and detailed study, because the attention so far has been drawn to archeographic, literary-historical or publishing problems. Most of the original works have never been subject to a lexicographic study in Slavic tradition. The project’s primary objective is to launch the systematic and advanced study of original works from various genres and periods of the development of the language in line with the following specific tasks:

To enrich and update the archive of the Department of History of Bulgarian Language by introducing a digital format for storing texts and to create a Digital Archive of Original Works for the Bulgarian Middle Ages.

To develop a methodology for extracting lexical information as part of the process of compiling specialised lexical databases within a network, which allow the comparative study of various diachronic cuts or genres, as well as lexical material from different lexical-semantic groups and subgroups. At the same time, the real history of the Bulgarian lexical system can be uncovered only after the usage of words is studied in various periods until the Modern era.

To accumulate empirical material from original scholar works in order to enable fundamental theoretical studies and the compilation of Bulgarian Historical Lexicology, which has not been created so far.

The project is in line with the priority area of research at the Institute for Bulgarian Language Linguistic, Cultural and Historical Heritage of Bulgarians.
