Honorary Insignia “Marin Drinov” for the renowned linguist prof. Igor Melchuk

On 16th October 2014 at 12.30 pm in the Great Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences prof. Igor Alexandrovich Melchuk (University of Montreal, Canada) will be awarded the Honorary Insignia of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences “Marin Drinov”.
Professor Igor Melchuk works in typology, general linguistics, semantics, dependency grammar, formal morphology, general and French lexicography, text generation, machine translation and other areas of theoretical and applied linguistics. His extensive theoretical works focused on different language levels and the relationships between them, are applied in the study of many languages. One of his greatest achievements is the foundation of the theory “Meaning ⬄ Text”, which has a significant influence on the development of modern applied and computational linguistics.
After the ceremony prof. Igor Melchuk will deliver a lecture on “Voice”.
The proposal for awarding the world renown linguist with the Honorary Insignia of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was initiated by the Institute for Bulgarian Language “Prof. L. Andreychin”.
