About Words and Dictionaries in the Digital Age
Open Day at the Institute for Bulgarian Language
On 14th May 2018 the Institute for Bulgarian Languages organises an Open Day which will take part from 11.00 until 16.00 at the Institute (52 Shipchenski Prohod St., building 17, floors 5 and 6, and the Grand Hall).
Those interested will be able to get acquainted with the Institute’s activity and scientific results, to observe in real time the work of language consultants at the Language Consultation Office, to learn interesting facts about Bulgarian vocabulary, phraseology and terminology, the origins of words, dialectical diversity and the historical development of our language, the latest trends in the choice of personal names and the naming of urban sites, the links between linguistics and technology and the place of technology in linguistics. The electronic resources for the Bulgarian language developed in the Institute will be presented: dictionaries, corpora, lexical databases, interactive map of Bulgarian dialects, linguistic atlases, etc. The visitors will have the opportunity to test their knowledge of Bulgarian spelling, grammar, vocabulary and etymology in various games organised by young researchers, and to win a prize from the campaign “The written word remains. Write correctly!” of the Institute for Bulgarian Language. Other surprises are also planned.

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences presents its institutes – the Institute for Bulgarian Language
On 15th May 2018 as part of the campaign “The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Presents its Institutes” in the Grand Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1, 15th November St.) researchers from the Institute for Bulgarian Language will present to the wide public the Institute’s most recent advances. From 11.00 until noon there will be presentations of electronic resources developed at the Institute for Bulgarian Language and available online: the Dictionary of Old Bulgarian and the Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary publishes in the Electronic repository of the Institute, the multi-volume Dictionary of the Bulgarian Language, the Map of the Bulgarian Dialects. For the first time the Online Consultation Blog of the Language Consultation Service will be presented. The attendees will learn about the campaign “The Written Word Remains. Write correctly!” which has been carried out for several years.

On 15th May 2018 from 11am in the foyer of the Central building of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences there will be an opening of the Exhibition “Bulgarian Alphabets” which will present the Glagolitic and the Cyrillic alphabets (old and modern) – advances of the Bulgarian cultural heritage. The Exhibition will be on display from 15th until 19th May 2018.
From 13.00 until 15.00 the Annual Conference “Scientific Advances at the Institute for Bulgarian Language” will take place dedicated to the 76th anniversary of the Institute in which researchers from Bulgaria and Norway will take part.
