Abstract:

The project aims at revealing some aspects of the Bulgarian national identity within the initiative of supporting the cultural diversity in Europe. The project is focused on ethnolinguistic lexicography, e-databases (archives and bibliographies), and theoretical and applied research. Ethnolinguistic lexicographical products are part of the Institute’s mission for preservation of the Bulgarian and European cultural heritage. The theoretical studies deal with key concepts in Bulgarian culture (such as home, family, work, mind, stupidity, freedom), and in comparison with other languages. The purpose is to outline stereotypes and language specific lexical concepts related to the national life and culture drawing upon different sources (archival, lexicographical, damaskins, paremia, questionnaire material). Furthermore, the project focuses on binary oppositions (pure vs. impure, local/national vs. foreign, good vs. bad), the language of Bulgarian folklore and fiction, Bulgarian anthroponyms. The research is of interdisciplinary nature and employs cognitive, diachronic, synchronous, comparative, contrastive and other methods.

The project can be useful for educational institutions that offer courses for linguists, ethnologists, anthropologists, etc. The main objectives correspond to the National Strategy for the Development of Scientific Research 2020 which emphasize on the cultural and historical heritage. The project is part of the priority area of research at the Institute for Bulgarian Language – Cultural and Historical Linguistic Heritage of Bulgaria.
