Marin Drinov Badge of Honour awarded to the world-renowned linguist Prof. Dr Igor Mel’čuk
On 16 October 2014 at 12:30 p.m., a ceremony will be held in the Grand Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences to confer the Marin Drinov Badge of Honour of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences on Prof. Dr Igor Alexandrovich Mel’čuk of the Université de Montréal, Canada.
Prof. Igor Mel’čuk’s research encompasses linguistic typology, general linguistics, semantics, dependency grammar, formal morphology, general and French lexicography, text generation, machine translation, and numerous other areas of theoretical and applied linguistics. His profound theoretical contributions concerning the different levels of language and the relationships between them have been applied to the study of a wide range of languages. One of his most significant achievements is the development of the Meaning–Text Theory, which has had a profound influence on the development of modern applied and computational linguistics.
Following the ceremony, Prof. Igor Mel’čuk will deliver a lecture entitled “Voice”.
The nomination for awarding the world-renowned linguist the Marin Drinov Badge of Honour of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was submitted by the Institute for Bulgarian Language “Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin”.
