26 September is the European Day of Languages – an initiative promoting Europe’s linguistic and cultural diversity. The Day has been celebrated since 2001 and promotes language learning, as well as professions related to translation and linguistics.

Traditionally, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation invites audiences in Bulgaria to take part in a series of events dedicated to the European Day of Languages.

  • From 1 to 30 September, you can take part in an online language quiz at this address. In addition to questions about foreign languages, the quiz will also introduce you to interesting facts about the Bulgarian language. Everyone aged 14 and over can take part and win attractive prizes. Some of the questions have been prepared by members of the Institute for Bulgarian Language.
  • On Saturday (26 September), we are organising the traditional Language Fair from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the City Garden in front of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre in Sofia. We have several reasons to celebrate – International Day of Sign Languages (23 September), European Day of Languages (26 September) and International Translation Day (30 September).

The Institute for Bulgarian Language “Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin” is a partner in organising the European Day of Languages together with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation, the Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria, language and cultural institutes from the EUNIC – Bulgaria cluster, consulates and embassies.
