Abstract:
The project focuses on the systematic study and publication of important written monuments documenting the historical development of the Bulgarian language through the centuries. It employs modern methods of preserving and promoting the written heritage, including phototype and typeset reproductions, digitisation, public online access, and critical or diplomatic editions accompanied by scholarly studies. The project continues the traditional objectives of Palaeoslavic studies and Bulgarian studies: reconstructing the diachronic development of Bulgarian as a Slavic, Balkan, and European language on the basis of surviving linguistic monuments and documents from the Middle Ages, the Bulgarian National Revival, and the Modern Period, including early Glagolitic and Cyrillic manuscripts, Early Modern Bulgarian literary texts, epigraphic material, and scribal notes.
The principal objective is to trace the historical development of the Bulgarian language at the graphemic and phonetic, morphosyntactic, and lexical-semantic levels. To achieve this, the project also applies innovative ethnolinguistic, anthropological, semiotic, and cultural approaches.
The project is consistent with the priorities of the National Strategy for Scientific Research to 2020 and the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020. It contributes to the study of Bulgarian cultural heritage and national identity within the broader context of preserving Europe’s cultural diversity. The project forms part of the Institute for Bulgarian Language’s research area Sources for the History of the Bulgarian Language.
