On 2 April 2026, the Institute for Bulgarian Language “Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin” at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences hosted a Spring Linguistics Seminar.
Rositsa Vasileva-Venetsia from the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission delivered a lecture entitled “The Place of the Bulgarian Language in the World’s Largest Terminology Database – IATE”. The seminar took place in the “Prof. Alexander Teodorov-Balan” Hall of the Institute for Bulgarian Language.
Abstract
The lecture “The Place of the Bulgarian Language in the World’s Largest Terminology Database – IATE” introduced the audience to a number of interesting facts about the European Union’s terminology database, IATE (Interactive Terminology for Europe), tracing its development from its creation to the present day and highlighting the evolution of its Bulgarian-language component. The lecture also presented the methods and tools used in terminology work at the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission, as well as specific examples demonstrating the added value of terminology records in the database.
About the Autor
Rositsa Vasileva-Venetsia was born in Sofia and graduated from the Italian Lyceum in Gorna Banya in 2001. In 2007, she completed a Master’s degree in Translation with distinction at the University of Turin, Italy. Her Master’s thesis focused on the bilingual writers Raymond Federman and Lisa Carducci, examining how both authors recreate their own works through the process of self-translation: from French into English and from English into French in the case of Federman, and from French into Italian in the case of Carducci.
Immediately after graduation, Rositsa joined the Bulgarian Language Department of the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission, established following Bulgaria’s accession to the European Union, where she worked as a translator from English, French and Italian into Bulgarian.
In 2008, she began specialising in terminology and has since worked continuously on enriching the Bulgarian-language content of IATE, the terminology database of the EU institutions. Over the years, she has attended numerous internal training courses and participated in several conferences organised by the Termisti Network, dedicated to terminology issues in the European context.
She regularly delivers training sessions within the Directorate-General for Translation, focusing primarily on translation technologies, terminology extraction tools, the creation and use of terminology databases, and related topics. In her daily work, she provides terminology support to colleagues involved in translating European Commission legislative proposals. She has been a long-standing member of the Terminology Network of the Directorate-General for Translation.
Rositsa is among the initiators and key contributors to the Bulgarian Language Network, established in 2010, which successfully connects translators from the Directorate-General for Translation with experts from the Bulgarian public administration, representatives of the academic community, and specialists from the Institute for Bulgarian Language at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
She is married and has two children. She is fond of large dogs, good food, and substantial books on history and archaeology.
