An Afternoon with Anastas Abadzhiev

The mysteries and wonders of Antarctica

The Institute for Bulgarian Language “Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin” at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences invites you to meet Anastas Abadzhiev.

An engineer by education, he graduated from the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy with a degree in Road Engineering. His professional career has been closely linked to the construction industry, where for decades he has worked as an engineer and project manager on construction projects in Bulgaria and abroad. He lived and worked in the United States for twenty-four years and has now returned to Bulgaria.

Alongside his professional activities, Anastas Abadzhiev has devoted a significant part of his life to the mountains and adventure sports. He has practised skiing from an early age and has been actively involved in mountaineering since 1987. Since 1991, he has served as a mountain rescuer and has extensive experience with the Mountain Rescue Service. He has completed specialised training in rock climbing, first aid, avalanche safety, and rope-access techniques.

His mountaineering experience includes ascents of peaks and alpine routes in Europe, North America, Asia, New Zealand, and Antarctica. Antarctica occupies a particularly important place in his life story, as he has visited the continent six times. He has worked both at the Bulgarian Antarctic Base “St. Kliment Ohridski” on Livingston Island and at McMurdo Station in the Ross Sea region. During his expeditions, he participated in construction and logistics activities as well as field research related to glaciers, rock formations, and the marine environment.

The meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss mountains, polar expeditions, the challenges of extreme environments, and the lessons nature teaches us. Anastas Abadzhiev will share personal stories from his travels and observations from some of the most remote places on Earth.

We look forward to welcoming you on 24 June at 4:00 p.m. in Room 503 at the Institute for Bulgarian Language, 52 Shipchenski Prohod Blvd., Block 17, Sofia.
