As part of the bilateral project “Explanatory Lexicography in Bulgaria and Serbia: Past, Present and Future” (2026–2028) between the Institute for Bulgarian Language at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Institute for the Serbian Language at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, visiting scholars from the Institute for the Serbian Language – Dr Nenad Ivanović, Dr Slobodan Novokmet, and Dr Marijana Đukić – delivered a lecture entitled “УЛОГА И ЗНАЧАЈ РЕЧНИКА САНУ У САВРЕМЕНОЈ ЛЕКСИКОГРАФИЈИ”.
On the Serbian side, the project is coordinated by Academician Dr Ljubinko Radenković, who also serves as co-leader together with Dr Nenad Ivanović. Researchers from the Institute for the Serbian Language at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts presented three topics to colleagues and guests of the Institute for Bulgarian Language, covering various aspects of the history and methodology of compiling the multi-volume Dictionary of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Rečnik SANU). Dr Nenad Ivanović discussed the Dictionary as a complex lexicographic enterprise. He outlined the development of its methodology throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and described the stages involved in the Dictionary’s compilation: preliminary processing, auxiliary editing, principal editing, co-editing, and peer review. Dr Marijana Đukić introduced the audience to the lexical corpus included in the Dictionary, encompassing both the standard Serbian language and vernacular speech within the Štokavian dialect area from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present day. Dr Slobodan Novokmet presented the manner in which grammatical information is incorporated into the Dictionary and emphasized its value as a reliable resource for linguistic practice.
Following the presentation and discussion, the guest lecturers were invited to meet with Prof. Dr Svetla Koeva, Director of the Institute for Bulgarian Language. A number of issues related to the lexicographic projects of the two institutes were discussed in a constructive and collegial atmosphere.
The researchers from the Institute for the Serbian Language also held a cordial meeting with colleagues from the Department of Bulgarian Lexicology and Lexicography. They exchanged information about the work of both institutes on the compilation of multi-volume dictionaries and discussed prospects for strengthening cooperation between the two institutions in the field of Slavic lexicography.
Lexicographers from the Institute for Bulgarian Language acquainted their Serbian colleagues with the Department’s print and electronic archives and presented their work on the collection, preservation, and utilization of linguistic material, as well as the preparation of dictionary entries for the Dictionary of the Bulgarian Language.
As a token of collegial cooperation, mutual respect, and friendship, the researchers from the Institute for the Serbian Language donated valuable publications to the library of the Institute for Bulgarian Language “Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin”.
