The project aims at studying and describing the linguistic features of Bulgarian dialects using comparative analysis with dialects of other European languages. The methods of linguistic geography are used for the preparation of dialectal maps that show the development of dialects in historical and comparative synchronous context, and present evidence about the origin of the Bulgarian language and its subsequent dialect division, as well as the contacts between Slavic and Balkan languages and other languages in Europe. The project is related to the study and preservation of the linguistic and cultural heritage of Europe and those related to Slavic languages. The results include linguistic maps of names of entities and language objects that are characteristic of the culture of European and Slavic people and reflect their historical development, common events and elements and specific components of national identity. The project supports the opportunities for expanding contacts in cultural and public life and for improving education. The project has a positive impact not only for the collaboration of Bulgarian scientists with European researchers, but also helps the integration of Bulgaria within science and culture. The Bulgarian team provides language material about Bulgarian dialects, prepares reports for the dialectal features and the etymology of words, compiles dialect maps, papers, review articles, etc.

The project is compliant with the guidelines of the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020, and in particular with the priorities Excellent Science and Societal Challenges. The project is a part of two priority areas of research at the Institute for Bulgarian Language – Cultural and Historical Linguistic Heritage of Bulgaria and Theoretical Linguistics.
