Abstract:

The project aims to diachronically study the establishment of the standard modern language norms, their codification at phonetic, morphological and syntactic level.

The grammatical literature from the first half of the 20th century is studied in detail, as well the activities related to spelling. Grammars with scientific value are considered alongside all grammar books produced for the purposes of education, in order to uncover the relations with European grammar literature from the same period, as well as the unique approach in representing specific features of standard Bulgarian. With respect to spelling, efforts are focused on the compilation of many spelling dictionaries and reference books, aimed for different users, contributing to the establishment and codification of spelling norms and reflecting the views of their authors – teachers, researchers, public figures.

The project responds to the need for a comprehensive and systematic (integral) description of the standard modern language as a fundamental element of the Bulgarian cultural heritage. By taking the challenge to place that description in the context of modern linguistic theories, the project meets the priority section Excellent Science of the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020.

The project is part of the priority area of research at the Institute for Bulgarian Language – Cultural and Historical Linguistic Heritage of Bulgaria.
