More than one hundred participants attended the webinar and listened with great interest to the presentations delivered by the invited speakers. Borislav Georgiev from the Bulgarian language community of the European Commission spoke about artificial intelligence in support of terminology work, drawing attention to experiments and practices developed within the Directorate-General for Translation.
“Legislative Drafting and Multilingualism” was the topic of the presentation delivered by Natalia Nikolova from the Legal Service of the European Commission, who discussed specific challenges in the translation of EU legislation. In her presentation, Assoc. Prof. Dr Kristiana Simeonova from the Institute for Bulgarian Language “Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin” at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences focused on the major achievements of contemporary Bulgarian terminology studies. She highlighted the practical dimension of terminology and presented examples illustrating different approaches to representing the meaning and content of terms. Assoc. Prof. Simeonova also introduced the audience to the work of the Department of Terminology and Terminography and to the terminological dictionaries published by the department.
The discussion following the presentations addressed issues related to the definition and form of terms, cooperation between terminologists and subject specialists, machine translation, and other topics. It left participants with the clear impression that terminology truly matters.
