The Institute for Bulgarian Language is organising the first meeting of the Bulgarian Grammar Forum on 27 November 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the Institute for Bulgarian Language (52 Shipchenski Prohod Blvd., Block 17, Sofia). The topic of the discussion is: Meaning and Structure of Language: Ways of Representation.
The discussion will address issues related to the two principal groups of grammatical theories of language–formal and functional–within which a variety of more widely known and less widely known theoretical frameworks have been developed. The main questions to be discussed are:
- Are the formal approach, which applies consistent procedures for the analysis and classification of linguistic units, and the pragmatic approach, which studies linguistic units in relation to the communicative purpose of the utterance, mutually opposed?
- Are there levels of linguistic analysis at which one approach should take precedence over the other, or is it possible to identify points of convergence between them?
The aim of the Forum is not (only) to provide definitive answers, but also to exchange ideas, put forward hypotheses, and create an environment for direct scholarly discussion on issues of Bulgarian grammar.
