The Institute for Bulgarian Language "Professor Lyubomir Andreychin" is one of the oldest institutes of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The Institute is a research centre for studying and describing the Bulgarian language – its contemporary state, history, dialectal diversity, and its relationship with other languages.

Priority areas of research at the Institute for Bulgarian Language include: theoretical linguistic research; academic dictionaries of the Bulgarian language; electronic language resources and tools for their processing; language culture; the linguistic and cultural-historical heritage of the Bulgarian people; sources for the history of the Bulgarian language.

The Institute for Bulgarian Language consists of 10 research departments and a library.

The Institute for Bulgarian Language provides various services to institutions and the public.

DICTIONARIES

Dictionary of the Bulgarian Language

The multi-volume "Dictionary of the Bulgarian Language" presents the lexical richness of the Bulgarian language over the past 150 years in its stylistic and functional diversity (literary vocabulary, colloquial vocabulary, dialectal vocabulary, terminology, archaic words, etc.). The 16 volumes published to date (up to the word SISTEMNOST) include a total of over 124,000 headwords. The dictionary is also available online.

Bulgarian Language Resources Online

BERON (Bulgarian Language Resources Online) is an intuitive platform with free access to reliable information about standard Bulgarian – covering spelling, pronunciation, punctuation and grammar. Its first product is the digitised version of the Official Spelling Dictionary of the Bulgarian Language.

Electronic Library

The Electronic Library provides free online access to various dictionaries and resources of the Institute for Bulgarian Language – the Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary (in 8 volumes), the Old Bulgarian Dictionary (in 2 volumes), specialised dictionaries, dialect atlases, and more.

"What Is Written Remains. Write Correctly!"

"What Is Written Remains. Write Correctly!" is a project of the Institute for Bulgarian Language aimed at drawing attention to the immense importance of literacy, education and science for the development of society. Materials related to the Bulgarian language are published and campaigns, language games and quizzes are organised.

NATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAMMES

Bulgarian Studies Abroad

The National Research Programme "Development and Promotion of Bulgarian Studies Abroad", funded by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria, aims to strengthen interest in Bulgarian Studies abroad as a field of academic research.

Education with Science

The Institute for Bulgarian Language's participation in the National Programme "Education with Science" has as its primary goal developing activities and enriching resources in support of research-based approaches and innovations in Bulgarian language teaching.

Innovations in Education

The Institute for Bulgarian Language participates in the National Research Programme "Development of Research and Innovation in the Bulgarian Pre-school and School Education System" with activities related to collaboration and continuing professional development for Bulgarian language teachers.
